חוקרים: שימוש בתוסף דקל ננסי, אפילו במינון של פי 3 מהמקובל, לא הצליחה להפחית תסמיני בלוטת ערמונית מוגדלת
ממצאי מחקרים קודמים העלו כי טיפול בתוסף של דקל ננסי- דקל המסור saw palmetto עשוי לסייע בטיפול בבלוטת ערמונית מוגדלת. ואולם ממצאי מחקר חדש מעלים כי אפילו כמות של פי 3 מן המינון הרגיל של תוסף התזונה דקל ננסי- לא הועיל בהפחתה של הסימפטומים של בלוטת ערמונית מוגדלת בקרב גברים בגיל העמידה. זאת בהשוואה לטיפול דמה- פלסבו.

על פי החוקרים למרות שהשימוש בדקל ננסי הוא נפוץ מאד בקרב אנשים הסובלים מבעיות בדרכי השתן התחתונות, התוצאות של המחקר מוכיחות כי דקל ננסי אינו מסייע להקלת תסמינים בבעיות אלה. החוקרים מציינים כי ייתכן שהמיצוי המסוים שעל פיו נערך המחקר אינו מכיל את החומקים המועילים, אולם ייתכן מאד שהממצאים הם רחבים יותר ומעידים על חוסר תועלת של דקל ננסי משום שמחקרים נוספים אחרים שממצאיהם פורסמו לאחרונה מעידים גם על כך שהשימוש בתוספי תזונה של דקל ננסי לא מועילים יותר מתרופות דמה.
דקל ננסי משמש לרוב לטיפול בבעית ערמונית מוגדלת (שפירה) בעיה המכונה היפרפלאזיה (התרבות יתר) של תאים שפירים בבלוטת הערמונית Benign prostatic hyperplasia .
במחקר השתתפו 200 גברים מעל גיל 45 שסבלו מתסמינים מתונים של בעית בלוטת ערמונית מוגדלת. הנבדקים קיבלו תוסף קפסולה של דקל ננסי או תרופת דמה פלסבו. לאחר 28 שבועות מינון הדקל הננסי לנבדקי קבוצת הניסוי הוכפל מ320 מיליגרם בתחילה לכדור ל640 מיליגרם ולאחר 48 שבועות שולש המינון ל960 מיליגרם.
מן הממצאים עלה כי לאחר 72 שבועות ניסוי, הגברים שקיבלו את התוסף לא הפיקו תועלת בדמות שיפור בתסמיני הבעיה של הערמונית המוגדלת, בהשוואה לקבוצה שקיבלה תרופות דמה.
המחקר נערך על ידי חוקרים מבית החולים הכללי במסצ’וסטס בארצות הברית . ממצאי המחקר פורסמו בכתב העת של הסתדרות הרופאים האמריקאית JAMA Journal of the American Medical Association.
